“ST JACQUES” KNIFE SNAKEWOOD HANDLE

Le St Jacques® : The pilgrim’s knife

The Le St Jacques® knife refers to the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, represented by the scallop shell found on this unique knife.

The Christian iconography of the shell appeared in the early Middle Ages with the cult of Saint James. Doubtless for symbolic reasons, the shell came to be seen as an attribute of this apostle, and thus took on the name of Saint James. Little by little, sewn onto hats, bags or coats, it became the emblem not only of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, but gradually of all pilgrims. In addition to its protective power, the shell was used to distinguish pilgrims from other travelers, to drink from fountains and to beg for alms, since the sight of the shell made charity a duty. Since then, pilgrims have made their journey under the sign of this symbol.
